A garage door that won’t close is a security risk. Here’s how to troubleshoot and temporarily secure your home until repairs can be made.

Quick Checks (5 Minutes)

1. Check the Photo Eyes

Located 4-6 inches from the ground on each side of the door. If misaligned or dirty, the door won’t close.

  • Clean lenses with a soft cloth
  • Ensure they face each other directly
  • Look for solid LED lights (not blinking)

2. Clear Obstructions

Check tracks for debris, toys, tools, or any objects blocking the door’s path.

3. Test the Remote

Try the wall button. If it works but remote doesn’t, it’s a remote issue, not the door.

Temporary Solutions

If you can’t get the door closed and need to leave:

  1. Disengage the opener – Pull the red emergency release cord
  2. Manually close – Carefully lower the door by hand
  3. Secure it – Use C-clamps in the tracks to prevent lifting
  4. Lock it – Engage any manual locks or slide bolts

Common Causes

  • Limit settings need adjustment
  • Broken spring (door will be heavy to lift)
  • Opener motor failure
  • Track damage or misalignment
  • Sensor malfunction
